GoDuke.com: When did you start wrestling and what is your first wrestling memory?
Connor Bass: “I started wrestling in second grade. I have a twin brother and we were always kind of small so my dad put us in wrestling so we could kind of hold our own. My first tournament I went out and got rolled up by some kid. He whooped me. A couple years later I started getting better and better and we got to this big tournament and I dropped the hammer on him. That was a nice little victory for me because that was my first match, my first big loss, and I came and got him back.”
Did you wrestle against your brother?
“Yeah we only wrestled in third and fourth grade. I beat him both times.”
Did you have any crazy singlets growing up?
“When I was growing up that wasn’t super popular so custom made singlets were pretty expensive. I’ve acquired ones from teams I’ve wrestled on so I’ve got plenty, but I always wanted to get one with my name on the back.”
Superstitions or routines?
“When I’m warming up, I don’t really like to be warming up in the gym. I’d rather be in the back where nobody is. That’s really my only thing. I try not to get too superstitious about it. I know some guys, their right sock has to be higher than their left one, but I just try to keep it simple.”
Favorite class so far at Duke?
“Definitely my American [Literature] class. It’s all seniors and it’s discussion based. English is kind of my strong suit so I’m doing really well in there. One of the seniors just said the other day how they read my posts all the time because they say I do a great job. That was a nice little gauge as to where I’m at.”
Last album you downloaded?
“The Siren Song of Counterculture by Rise Against. It’s a modern alternative rock band. I like them a lot and that’s what I listen to before I wrestle.”
Favorite TV show to watch right now?
“Sons of Anarchy. It’s kind of an intense show. I’m actually behind on the season. It just started last week and I can’t find anybody here who is willing to watch it with me so it looks like I’ll be spending some time watching it by myself.”
“Definitely Oreos. I know they’re not exactly the healthiest thing. Double stuffed for sure. I’m all original Oreos. I won’t even eat the vanilla ones. My dad actually just sent me a box because I just certified [weight] today. Actually, it’s weird. I don’t dip them in my milk. I take a bite and then take a drink because I don’t want anything to contaminate the actual Oreo. It’s holy to me.”
Beach or mountains?
“That’s a tough one. I’m big into the outdoors so that’s a tough one. I’d have to go with the mountains. I love the beach, but the mountains because I love to explore. I took a gap year last year and spent a lot of time outside hiking, fishing and kayaking and stuff.”
Chocolate or vanilla?
“Chocolate all the way.”
