DURHAM, N.C. –Duke University All-America Chelsea Gray will miss the remainder of the 2013-14 campaign following a right kneecap fracture that occurred in Sunday’s, 78-57, victory over Boston College in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

It marks the second straight year the two-time All-America has seen her season come to an end much earlier than expected.  A 5-11 product of Manteca, Calif., Gray had a MRI on Monday morning and it revealed the injury.  She will have surgery, but it has not been scheduled yet.

“For all of us, it’s almost impossible to talk about right now,” commented Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie.  “We are just working through it as best we can and trying to support Chelsea in all ways possible.  Our hearts go out to Chelsea and her family.”

As a junior, Gray played in 25 contests before suffering a dislocated kneecap against Wake Forest on Feb. 17, 2013.  She was averaged 12.6 points, 5.4 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 steals on the season, but still was named Co-ACC Player of the Year, Associated Press and WBCA Coaches All-America.

So far in 2013-14, Gray was averaging 10.8 points, 7.2 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.9 steals through 17 games.  Her 7.2 assists ranked sixth nationally and she needed only 35 more dishes to become Duke’s all-time assist leader.  Gray was considered to be one of the top point guards in the nation.

“It is definitely the nature of sport where different people step up, especially in the face of adversity,” said McCallie.  “There’s no question our team is strong and our team will do that without question. It’s just a little bit hard to fathom at the current moment, but we will.”

Third-ranked Duke (16-1) will next host Virginia on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m., on RSN-TV in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
