DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s cross country team will start the year ranked tied for eighth in the conference with newcomer Louisville, as announced by the conference office Thursday. Syracuse, the defending ACC champions, garnered the top position in the conference preseason poll.
In addition to Syracuse, No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 4 Florida State and No. 5 NC State make up the top five conference teams, with No. 6 Virginia Tech, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 10 Wake Forest, No. 11 Georgia Tech, No. 12 Clemson, No. 13 Pittsburgh, No. 14 Boston College and No. 15 Miami rounding out the ranked conference teams.
At last season’s conference championship, Syracuse earned the team title, while North Carolina placed second, Notre Dame took third, Virginia finished fourth, Virginia Tech posted a fifth-place performance and Duke placed sixth.
With five of the squad’s nine competitors from the 2013 conference championship meet graduating, the Blue Devils look to develop a young squad during the 2014 season.
The Duke men are scheduled to open their season Friday at the Virginia Duals, with the Blue Devils taking to the start line at 5:15 p.m.
