GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke rookie running back Shaun Wilson continued his honor haul following Saturday’s record-breaking performance against Kansas as he was named the ACC Rookie of the Week, according to an announcement by the league office Monday.
On Sunday, Wilson was selected as the National Freshman of the Week by Athlon Sports. The ACC honor is the first for Wilson, who is the first Duke freshman to receive the league’s rookie of the week honor since DeVon Edwards on Nov. 11, 2013.
During Duke’s 41-3 home victory against the Jayhawks on Saturday, Wilson turned in a school single-game record 245 rushing yards with three touchdowns on just 12 carries. The yardage total, which eclipsed Robert Baldwin’s school standard of 238 yards set against Maryland in 1994, also ranks as the fourth-highest single-game total by a freshman in ACC history. Overall, the rushing yardage total marks the 27th-highest single-game total in ACC history.
Wilson’s 245 rushing yards mark the third-highest single-game total in FBS action this season behind only South Florida’s Marlon Mack (275 vs. Western Carolina) and Indiana’s Tevin Coleman (247 vs. Indiana State).
Wilson, a Charlotte, N.C., product, averaged 20.4 yards per attempt versus Kansas. His three touchdown runs of 45, 68 and 69 yards, allowed him to match Duke’s single-game record for total points (18) by a freshman, equaling the standard set by Edwards vs. N.C. State in 2013.
With the victory over Kansas, Duke improved to 3-0 for the first time since winning its first seven games during the 1994 campaign.
The ACC’s other weekly honors included Boston College offensive back Tyler Murphy, offensive lineman Andy Gallik and linebacker Josh Keyes. Virginia defensive back Anthony Harris and specialist Ian Frye, Miami receiver Phillip Dorsett and Wake Forest defensive lineman Josh Banks rounded out the list of league selections.
The Blue Devils host Tulane this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available at GoDuke.com or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 919-681-BLUE.
