Brandon Nelsen enters his  third year as an assistant coach for the Blue Devils in 2017-18 . Nelsen works primarily with the lighter weights in the wrestling room and is crucial in recruiting efforts.
After a strong first season on staff, Nelsen jumped another level in helping the Blue Devils put five in the NCAA Championships, including the Finesilver quartet who he worked with very closely. With Nelsen training with him almost daily, Mitch and Zach Finesilver took home runner-up honors at the ACC Championships. Mitch went on to miss a podium spot at the NCAA Championships by one match. A good mentor for the student-athletes, Nelsen also is instrumental in Duke’s success in the classroom as three Blue Devils earned NWCA All-Academic honors. 
In his inauguarl season on the staff, Nelsen helped Duke land three in the NCAA Championships, including Jake Faust (165) and Connor Bass (1740 who he worked with more closely. Nelsen also was instrumental in bringing in the largest and arguably the most talented rookie class in recent memory after his first year as the recruiting coordinator. 
Nelsen came to Durham after spending a year as graduate assistant at the University of Indianapolis. During his time in Indianapolis Nelsen worked primarily with the lightweight group. He was instrumental in mentoring a pair of All-Americans at 125 and 133 pounds, which included a runner-up finish at NCAA Division II Championships at 133 pounds.
Off the mat, his wrestlers at Indianapolis were equally as successful, earning all-academic team honors nationally. The team finished 10th nationally in the NWCA academic rankings with a team GPA of 3.252.
Nelsen is a two-time NCAA qualifier for Purdue. He finished his career with an 84-55 record and is a three-time Big Ten placer. Nelsen competed at 141 and 149 pounds during his career.
Nelsen completed his career with the Boilermakers ranked fourth on Purdue’s reversals list with 45. He also graduated sixth in career falls (30) and 17th in career back points with 124. In addition, Nelsen also has experience in international styles of wrestling, placing fourth at the University Freestyle Nationals.
In addition to being a wrestler for the Boilermakers, Nelsen served as a social media coordinator and was responsible for the creation of social media campaigns on both Twitter and Facebook for a student public relations group. He also was a member of the Boilermaker Athletic Council, which helped foster positive interaction among student-athletes with a particular focus on leadership.
In his first two years at Purdue, Nelsen also was a part of the emerging leaders program. He joined with other underclassmen as they all pursued leadership positions within their sports and on campus overall.  
A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Nelsen earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Society from Purdue University in 2015. Nelsen resides his wife Lindsey reside in Durham.
