DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce the signing of right-handed pitcher Toma Shigaki-Than to a National Letter of Intent. A senior at Oakton High School in Oakton, Va,. Shigaki-Than joins the Blue Devils in the fall of 2017.

Shigaki-Than features a fastball up to 91 mph in addition to strong command of his secondary pitches, including a breaking ball and changeup.

“Toma has very advanced feel with his secondary stuff and is plus command, plus pitchability right-handed arm,” said Pollard. “His very unique delivery creates a lot of deception and makes the baseball very tough to pick up out of his hand. He’s a guy who really has a chance to come in and make an immediate impact.”

Shigaki-Than is a four-year letter winner at Oakton, earning all-district and all-conference accolades during his high school career.

A 2016 Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention selection, Shigaki-Than is also rated among the top 500 overall prospects and the No. 174 right-hander in the 2017 recruiting class by the organization. Perfect Game also ranked Shigaki-Than as the No. 11 prospect and No. 5 right-hander in the state of Virginia.

Shigaki-Than is part of Duke’s 10-member 2017 signing class. GoDuke.com is set to release details on each of the Blue Devils’ 2017 recruiting class members over the coming weeks.
