RALEIGH, N.C.—The Duke wrestling team opened the dual with back-to-back victories from Jacob Kasper and Thayer Atkins, but 10th-ranked NC State responded in convincing fashion with eight straight wins for the 34-6 victory over the Blue Devils.

The setback for Duke (2-3, 0-1 ACC) was the third against a top-20 team, while NC State improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC action.

Kasper started the night on the right foot for the Blue Devils, posting his 19th victory of the year with a 3-0 blanking of Michael Boykin at heavyweight. After little action in the opening minutes, Kasper scored with time winding down in the first period for a 2-0 lead after three minutes. The nation’s No. 7 wrestler escaped quickly in the second and was outstanding the rest of the way. Boykin took a quality shot in the third, but good defense from Kasper solidified the 3-0 victory.

At 125 pounds, Atkins used a fantastic first period en route to an 11-6 decision. Atkins got to his offense right away against freshman Tommy Cox and scored a takedown and four nearfall points for the 6-0 lead. Trailing 10-2 after two periods, Cox tried to make a comeback in the third, but Atkins fought his way to his career-best 15th win of the year and a 6-0 Blue Devil lead in the dual.

The Wolfpack picked up three consecutive wins from their top 20 wrestlers to jump into the 12-6 lead at intermission. Sophomore Cole Baumgartner battled tough in his 133-pound match, but couldn’t overcome and early deficit to 15th-ranked Jamal Morris.

Coming out of the break, Jake Faust made his ACC debut at 157 pounds against Thomas Bullard. Faust scored early for the 2-0 lead and looked to build his points. Bullard however, had other ideas as he escaped and scored the takedown to go in front 3-2. Faust responded right away with a reversal, but couldn’t keep control as they headed to the first break even at 4-4.

An escape in the second pushed Faust in front 5-4 after two periods. The Bellville, Ohio native started the third on top and built his riding time to over a minute before Bullard regained the lead on a reversal. A second stall call on Faust extended the Wolfpack freshman’s lead to 7-5 and the Blue Devil senior’s escape and last second efforts to score the takedown came up just short in the 7-6 setback.

The final match of the night at 197 was an action packed affair with NC State’s Malik McDonald and Duke’s Luke Farinaro trading points throughout the seven minutes. With time ticking down in the third period and Farinaro trailing 10-8, but holding riding time, the Duke junior looked for the go-ahead score. McDonald defended well and tacked on a takedown and four back points for the 17-8 major decision and 34-6 NC State victory.

Duke returns home for its next bout, hosting No. 20 Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
