Maria Finnegan serves as a full time instructor in the Department of HWPER at Duke University.
She teaches undergraduate physical education courses for credit across several modalities including: Standup Paddleboard (SUP) Fitness, Beginner Yoga, Intermediate Yoga, Weight Training for Women and Fitness for Women. Maria has led SUP classes for the Duke Senior Athlete Interactive Leadership Experience (S.A.I.L.) as well as yoga for LDOC and other student groups.
Maria has a Masters degree in Neuroscience and holds several certifications in yoga, group fitness, TRX and standup paddleboarding. She owns “Maria Finnegan Fitness,” a fitness business specializing in group and private fitness training as well as wellness events and workshops. She also trains and mentors aspiring fitness instructors and trainers. This past year Maria began providing online fitness content for students and clients through BurnAlong.com. Maria has spent much of her life playing sports, staying physically active, and inspiring and motivating others to get up and move. While she initially had a career in clinical research science, she soon discovered a strong pull towards teaching and promoting health and wellness. Maria is so grateful to have found a career where she can combine her love for exercise, yoga and healthy living with her passion for science and education. “Stronger thank you think” is Maria’s daily mantra and she uses this to guide her students and clients in discovering their inner strength, overcoming obstacles, and pursuing their goals.
When she is not teaching at Duke you can find Maria on her paddleboard at the lake, coaching her three children on the soccer field and basketball court, going on dates with her husband, or playing with her golden doodle puppy.
