DURHAM, N.C. – Carrie DeMange of the 14th-ranked Duke volleyball team was named the AVCA National Player of the Week, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Monday.
DeMange, a 6-2 middle blocker from Springboro, Ohio (Archbishop Alter), is the first member of the Atlantic Coast Conference to receive the national honor this season. A two-time AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selection, DeMange led Duke (16-4, 11-1 ACC) to back-to-back ACC victories over the weekend, including a 3-0 sweep over Virginia Tech and a hard-fought 3-2 win over Virginia in Cameron Indoor Stadium. For the weekend, DeMange turned in a .381 hitting percentage, 45 kills, 38 digs and 12 total blocks. Her .406 hitting percentage against Virginia Tech was a team-high, as were her 16 kills against the Hokies, and 29 against Virginia. DeMange has turned in at least 24 kills in five of Duke’s last six matches and leads the ACC with 394 kills and a 5.18 per game average.
DeMange also recorded her 13th consecutive double-double with a pair over the weekend and just missed a triple-double with 29 kills, 28 digs and eight blocks against the Cavaliers. Eight of DeMange’s kills against Virginia came in game five, as the senior middle blocker accounted for nine of Duke’s 15 points in the deciding game.
DeMange currently ranks among the top-10 in the nation with a 5.18 kill per game average, a number that tops the ACC and holds a commanding lead over the second-best mark of 4.64 by Virginia’s Sarah Kirkwood. DeMange also leads the conference with 5.78 points per game and appears among the ACC’s top-10 in hitting percentage with a .315 clip.
