CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke Blue Devils competed in the Eddie and Jo Smith UNC Classic on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C., at the Eddie Smith Field House. Although there were no postseason qualifying marks or Duke top five records lists broken into, the men’s track and field team had some strong performances. All results from the one-day competition can be found at www.trackshark.com.

Men’s: One of the first Blue Devils to compete on Saturday morning was sophomore Sid Palas in the pole vault. The Asheville, N.C., native had the best performance of his career when he vaulted to a height of 15’-5.0.” Palas placed second in Chapel Hill and fell just shy of the IC4A qualifying mark of 15’-9.0.”

Senior Peter Lewellen ran the 800m in a time 1:57.93 on Saturday afternoon. Although a little longer than his strongest distances of 400 and 500 meters, Lewellen took second place at the meet.

The Blue Devils finished up in the 3,000m with freshman Ryan McDermott and sophomore Will Smith. In his collegiate indoor debut, McDermott won the race by over eight seconds in a time of 8:30.97. Smith took fourth place in 8:48.17. The IC4A standard in the event is 8:29.50, which McDermott just missed out on.

The Duke Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Team will next compete Jan. 25 and 26 in the Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass.
