No. 3 Duke defeated Miami, 88-73, on February 2, 2008, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  Duke improves to 19-1 overall and 7-0 in the ACC while the Hurricanes fall to 13-8 and 2-5, respectively.

Series Notes

  • Duke now leads the series 10-1 and has won 10 straight in the series.  Duke is 6-0 vs. Miami in ACC regular season play.
  • Duke is now 5-0 vs. the Canes at Cameron Indoor Stadium and 10-0 under Mike Krzyzewski.

Milestones

  • Duke’s 19-1 record through 20 games matches the best start in school history.  Duke has been 19-1 a total of eight times in its history, all eight times under Coach K with seven of those instances occurring in the past 11 seasons.

Win Streaks & Records

  • Duke has won nine straight overall including all seven of its ACC games.  Duke is the only undefeated team in ACC play.
  • Duke is 7-0 in the ACC this season, marking the 12th time Duke has started 7-0 in league play, and the seventh time in the last 11 seasons.
  • Duke has now sold out 269 consecutive games at Cameron Indoor Stadium dating back to Nov. 16, 1990, against Boston College.  Overall, Duke has now played in front of a sold out venue in 223 of its last 261 games, as well.

Duke In February

  • Duke is now 487-258 all-time in the month of February, including 160-60 under Coach K.  Duke has won five of its last six and is 64-20 since 1997-98.
  • Groundhog day has been somewhat unlucky to the Blue Devils, as Duke is now 16-11 all time on Feb. 2 and broke a two game losing streak.  Duke is now 6-5 on Feb. 2 under Coach K.  Comparatively, Duke is 6-2 on Feb. 1 and 6-1 on Feb. 3 under Coach K.

Team Highs & Lows

  • Duke’s 12 three point field goals is the third highest total of the season while the 30 attempts is the second highest total (31 vs. Virginia).  Both marks are Miami opponent season highs, as well.
  • Duke’s 26 free throws is the second highest total of the season (27 vs. N.C. Central) while the 40 attempts is the highest of the season.
  • Duke’s 19 offensive rebounds is the second highest total of the season (20 vs. N.C. Central)
  • Duke’s seven blocks is tied for the second highest total of the season (9 vs. N.C. Central)

Second Half Outbursts

  • Duke continued its impressive second half play against Miami.  In the last three games, Duke has outscored its opponent 154-91, an average of 51.3 to 30.3, or +21.0 per game.  In ACC play, Duke has outscored its opponents by an average 12.0 per game.

Duke Offense

  • Duke connected on 12-of-30 from behind the arc, marking  eighth time this season Duke has hit 10 or more from long range.  Duke is now 8-0 this season and 118-29 all-time when hitting 10 or more threes as a team.
  • Duke shot just 10-of-31 (.313) in the first half from the field, including just 2-of-14 from inside the arc (8-of-18 from three).  Duke’s two first half two-point field goals is the second lowest total in Duke history (half breakdown of field goals available since 1957-58).  Duke’s 14.3 percentage is also the second lowest ever.  The lowest on both accounts was an 1-of-8 (.125) performance against N.C. State in the ACC Tournament on March 8, 1968.  That game ended up a 12-10 win for the Wolfpack and was the lowest scoring game in ACC history.  Duke was also just 10-of-21 (.476) from the line in the first half. 
  • Duke rebounded in the second half to shoot 15-of-29 (.517) from the floor and 16-of-19 (.842) from the line.  From two-point range, Duke was 11-of-17 (.647), up 50.3 percent from the first half from two-point range and up 36.6 at the free throw line.

Duke Defense

  • Duke held the Hurricanes to just 3-of-11 (.273) from behind the arc.  In ACC play, no team has hit more than four three-pointers against Duke.  Duke’s league foes are just 24-of-84 (.286) from behind the arc.  Overall, Duke’s opponents are 91-of-303 (.300) on the season.
  • Duke’s seven blocks matches the second best total of the season for Duke (nine vs. N.C. Central) and is the highest in ACC play this season. 
  • Duke forced 14 turnovers and gave up just 11 assists, marking the 17th time in 20 games that Duke’s opponent has had more turnovers than assists.

Coach K

  • Coach K is now 794-262 as a head coach, ranking sixth on the NCAA wins chart and third among active coaches. Eddie Sutton is fifth overall and second among active coaches with 799 wins while first overall is Coach K’s college coach, Bob Knight, with 901 wins.
  • With 794 career wins in his first 33 seasons, Coach K is currently second on the NCAA’s list of most victories in a coaches’ first 33 season.  He trails Dean Smith, who had 802 wins through 33 seasons.
  • Coach K now has 794 wins in 1,056 career games and is looking to become the third-fastest coach to 800 wins based on number of games.  Adolph Rupp (972) and Dean Smith (1,029) are already out of reach and Bobby Knight is currently third, accomplishing the feat in (1,102 games).
  • Coach K now has 721 wins at Duke and ranks seventh on the NCAA’s chart for most wins at one school.  In sixth place is DePaul’s Ray Meyer with 724.  Coach K is also second among active coaches behind Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim (765).

DeMarcus Nelson

  • The senior scored 21 points, hitting 6-of-12 from the field and 9-of-14 from the line.  He added six rebounds, four assists with no turnovers, two steals and a block in 32 minutes.  He scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half.
  • He is now averaging 16.7 points at home this season and has hit on 64-of-115 (.557) from the field in home games.
  • In the last six home games, Nelson has five 20 point performances and is averaging 21.5 points per game and has shot 43-of-67 (.642) from the field.
  • In ACC play, he is averaging 18.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 45-of-83 (.542) from the field.
  • Nelson has six 20 point games this season, all in the last 11 games.  He has a pattern of scoring 20 points in every other game during that span.
  • Nelson now has nine career 20 point games and also has five straight in double figures and 17 on the season and 60 in his career. 

Greg Paulus

  • The junior scored 16 points, hitting on 4-of-10 from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the line.  He added six rebounds and three assists.
  • Paulus is now averaging 10.2 points per game this season, giving the Blue Devils five players averaging in double figures this season.
  • Paulus has now connected on 32 of his last 35 free throws and is 23-of-26 (.885) in ACC play and 42-of-49 (.857) on the season.
  • Paulus has now hit a three pointer in 19 of 20 games this season and in 47 of 53 games dating back to the start of his sophomore season.  He is now 9-of-18 (.500) in his last two games behind the arc.
  • Paulus now has four straight games scoring in double figures and nine straight games with nine or more points.  He has 10 games this season scoring in double figures and 42 such games in his career.

Kyle Singler

  • The freshman had 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and 3-of-4 from the line, and he added five rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal in just 24 minutes plagued with some foul trouble.
  • Singler’s three three-pointers matches his season high and is the third time he’s hit three from behind the arc.
  • Singler has 14 games scoring in double figures this season.
  • Singler matched his season high with three blocks.

Nolan Smith

  • The freshman scored nine points, hitting 3-of-5 from behind the arc and keeping Duke in the game early.  He added a blocked shot, as well.
  • His three triples is the highest total of his career and the second time he’s connected on multiple three-pointers in a game.

With The Win, Duke Improved To...

  • 1,840-805 all-time, including 721-203 under Coach K
  • 503-270 all-time in ACC regular season play, including 279-123 under Coach K and 148-35 since 1996-97
  • 829-470 all-time against current members of the ACC
  • 718-148 all-time at Cameron Indoor Stadium, including 358-53 under Coach K and 166-13 in the last 179 home games
  • 561-93 vs. unranked teams under Coach K, including 249-23 overall, 124-4 at home, 119-16 vs. ACC unranked teams since 1997-98
  • 252-47 this decade, more wins than any other team in the NCAA
  • 898-227 all-time as a ranked team all-time, including 98-20 as the No. 3 team, 390-73 as a Top 3 team, 480-89 as a Top 5 and 756-170 as a Top 10 team
