Duke Suffers 4-3 Loss to No. 32 Virginia Tech

Durham, N.C. Ė The No. 41 Duke men’s tennis team played at home for the first time in over a month on Friday but came up short in their match against No. 32 Virginia Tech losing the final singles contest for a 4-3 loss.

For the seventh time this season in 17 matches, the Blue Devils found themselves tied with their opponent at 3-3 with one final singles match left to decide the outcome. Unfortunately for Duke they have now lost six of those seven nailbiters as Alex Stone fell short in three sets against Sebastien Jacques at the No. 5 spot 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.  

Duke had rallied after losing the doubles point to win a pair of quick victories at the No. 4 and 6 positions. Dylan Arnould cruised to a near perfect 6-1, 6-0 win over Pedro Graber at No. 4. Arnould improved to 14-12 overall, 8-4 at the No. 4 spot and 4-2 in ACC play. Jared Pinsky followed up Arnould’s win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Brandon Corace. Pinsky evens his overall record to 9-9 while improving to 4-2 against league competition.

Virginia Tech came back to take a 3-2 lead by defeating the two ranked Blue Devils. Nicolas Delgado de Robles upset No. 62 Reid Carleton in the No. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-2 and No. 40 Albert Larregola then claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over No. 50 David Goulet in the top spot. Entering Friday’s match Carleton and Goulet were each 5-1 in ACC play.

Junior Kiril Dimitrov tied the score at 3-3 with a victory in the No. 3 slot. He defeated Yoann Re 6-1, 7-5 to improve to 13-14 on the year, 3-0 at the No. 3 spot and 3-4 in ACC competition.

The Blue Devils fall to 7-10 on the season with the loss and 4-3 in conference play. The Hokies improved to 5-3 in the league and 12-5 overall.    

Duke will be in action again on Sunday when they take on undefeated and No. 1 Virginia at Ambler Tennis Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
