DES MOINES, Iowa - Redshirt freshman John Austin placed eighth in the javelin finals with a distance of 216’-10” at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium. By finishing in the top eight of the 12 finalists, Austin earned automatic All-America status, becoming the first male Blue Devil to do so since Brent Warner in the pole vault in 2003.

Austin capped off an amazing first full season at Duke with his performance at the NCAA Championships. His personal best of 225’-5” that came at the NCAA East Regional on May 30 is the Duke record in the event.

A Look Ahead: Six rising sophomore Blue Devils will compete in the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships from June 20-22 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Four former female Blue Devils will attempt to qualify for the Olympics at the U.S. Olympic Trials from June 27-July 6 in Eugene, Ore.
