DURHAM, N.C. The NBA season tips off tonight with 14 former Duke Blue Devils donning NBA jerseys. Duke has the most players represented in the NBA with all 14 that entered training camp at the beginning of the month finding a roster spot on their respective team.

Starting the season with a contract are Shane Battier, Houston; Carlos Boozer, Utah; Elton Brand, Philadelphia; Luol Deng, Chicago; Chris Duhon, New York; Mike Dunleavy, Indiana; Grant Hill, Phoenix; Dahntay Jones, Denver; Corey Maggette, Golden State; Josh McRoberts, Indiana; DeMarcus Nelson, Golden State; Shavlik Randolph, Portland; J.J. Redick, Orlando and Shelden Williams, Sacramento.

Duke’s 14 NBA players will earn $74,307,096 for the 2008-09 season. In all, six former Blue Devil basketball players (Brand, Deng, Maggette, Duhon, Jones and Randolph) signed new contracts totaling over $216 million this summer.

Nine Blue Devil alums will potentially be in the starting lineups for their teams as the 2009-09 season gets under way, although three of the expected starters (Battier, Dunleavy and Maggette) may miss their respective season openers due to injury.

The surprise out of that group may be Nelson, who went undrafted before signing with Golden State this summer. He is the projected starting point guard for the Warriors season opener against New Orleans. Nelson beat out the former understudy of Jason Kidd, Marcus Williams and C.J. Watson, who is the returning backup in the Warriors offensive system. He scored in double figures in three of the six preseason games, including a high of 18 points against Oklahoma City. Nelson has also earned praise from teammates and the coaching staff for his defense, work ethic and ability to finish in the lane.

“That says a lot about DeMarcus,” Stephen Jackson said after Monday's practice. “That says a lot about his work ethic and not about how Williams has been playing. Coach knows exactly what he wants and what he needs for this team while Monta (Ellis) is out. Right now, it looks like DeMarcus is what he's looking for.”

Tonight both Deng and Randolph will be in action as Chicago takes on Milwaukee and Portland battles with the L.A. Lakers.
