DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team added a few more preseason honors to the list today as InterMat (www.intermatwrestle.com) has tabbed the Blue Devils 25th in its preseason national poll. Duke also landed two individuals in the top 20 of their respective weight classes.
Duke recently was picked as the preseason No. 24 team by Wrestling Insider Magazine. Iowa tops the InterMat poll, while Iowa State and Ohio State round out the top three. The Blue Devils are one of three ACC squads represented in the rankings with Maryland coming in at No. 10 and Virginia at No. 20.
Seniors John Barone and Konrad Dudziak also earned individual recognition in their respective weight division. Dudziak is picked second among heavyweights, while Barone is 18th in the 184-pound group. Both also were ranked in the WIN preseason individual rankings.
Dudziak became Duke's first wrestling All-America in 2009 as he brought home runner-up honors as a heavyweight. After missing a month of the season due to injury, Dudziak returned to the mats to win an ACC title and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The native of Bayonne, N.J., finished the year with a 31-3 overall record.
Barone enters his final season after breaking the Duke single-season wins mark with a 36-8 overall record. He went unbeaten in dual matches and earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. The native of Shirley, N.Y., also holds the career record for wins with a 106-32 slate.
The Blue Devils officially kick off their season on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8 at the Freshman and Sophomore Open in Charleston, S.C., and the Hokie Classic, respectively.
