Inclement Weather and Lightning Policy
Duke University Athletics event management staff utilizes the Weather Data software and text messaging services, as well as the Accu Weather Smart RAD radar software.

The Duke Event Management staff will monitor the weather leading up to and during the game.  If rain or other weather-related problems cause delays or cancellation of the game, umpires and coaches will be notified as soon as possible.  If lightning is detected within a 10 mile radius of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Weather Data sends a text message to Training Room and Event Management Staff.  Following receipt of the text message, the Game Manager consults Weather Data officials and the Accu Weather radar, and then notifies the umpire.  If lightning is detected within the 10 mile radius of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, then play will be stopped and the field will be cleared. Players, coaches, umpires and all other individuals should clear the field and take cover. Umpires will be taken to their locker room and the visiting team will get on their bus or be taken to an auxiliary area of the ballpark (if available) until the lightning is out of the area as indicated by the weather service. There will be a 30-minute delay from the last detected lightning strike within 10 miles of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. This will be verified by Weather Data and the Accu Weather radar.

Duke Event Management will work very closely with Weather Data officials and the game umpires to be prepared to preserve the integrity of the field if a storm with lightning is imminent.  In situations where lightning is inevitable and approaching quickly along with heavy rains, Duke Event Management will make the recommendation to the game umpires to delay the game and have the field covered.  If the game is delayed due to lightning within 10 miles of the Durham Bulls Ball Park, Duke Athletic Staff in conjunction with the Durham Bulls grounds crew will may every attempt possible to cover the field with the tarp.  The Duke Baseball program is responsible for putting the tarp on the field only when lightning is not present or outside the 10 mile radius.  It will take approximately 15 minutes to get the tarp in place.  If a weather delay occurs we ask that the visiting team stay off the field.

Note: Lightning can, and does, strike as far as 10 miles away from the rain shaft. It does not have to be raining for lightning to strike. The safety and welfare of the participants, coaches, event staff and spectators is the single most important consideration.
