  • Duke held a two-hour practice on Thursday at the Brooks Practice Facility.
  • The Blue Devils utilized simulated crowd noise for the first time this preseason ... during two periods of practice a truck filled with speakers blared out the sounds of gameday while the team ran plays.
  • The predicted starting five on the offensive line did a good job creating space for the running backs in practice ... redshirt senior guard Brandon Harper continued his good camp with a couple of big blocks that sent defenders to the ground ... redshirt junior tackle Kyle Hill also did a good job and is one of the Blue Devils' All-ACC candidates this season.
  • The running backs were also effective catching passes out of the backfield ... during the team vs. scout periods Desmond Scott and Patrick Kurunwune each caught a couple of passes to show their good hands.
  • While pleased with the progress of the defensive unit, head coach David Cutcliffe offered this to the media following Thursday's practice: "Do I think we still have to prove ourselves and have a lot of work to do?  Absolutely.  There is a growing up process that has to take place."
  • One of Duke's walk-ons this season, freshman defensive tackle Tevin Hood out of Phoenix, Ariz., has impressed coaches ... Hood made good use of his reps in the 1-on-1 pass rushing drills against the offensive lineman, showing his speed and quickness off the line for his size (5-11, 305).
  • Thursday marked the return of redshirt freshman defensive end Sydney Sarmiento to the practice field ... The Florence, S.C., native underwent knee surgery back on August 17 ... "Sydney worked today," Cutcliffe said. "I am convinced he's going to be full speed and ready to go based on what I saw today.  He was in some live work today. 
  • It was announced today that Clarkston Hines will be honored by Duke University and The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame with an NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute Nov. 6 as the Blue Devils host Virginia in Durham.
  • Senior center Bryan Morgan was announced as one of 37 players on the 2010 Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List on Thursday ... the Rimington Trophy is handed out annually to the nation's top center in college football.
  • Friday's edition of Extra Points will be the final one for 2010 as Duke enters its first game week of the season ... the Blue Devils will take on Elon at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 in Wallace Wade Stadium ... tickets are available and may be purchased online at or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 1-877-375-DUKE (3853).
