DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving team kicked off its season on Saturday in an away meet against UNC Wilmington. The men's side captured its first win of the season, while the women fell to the Seahawks.

The teams set a record of nine new pool records at the Seahawk Natatorium, four of which were set by the Blue Devils.

One of these records was set by the men's 200 freestyle relay team of Ben Hwang, Adam Flur, Spencer Booth and Ben Tuben. The relay posted a time of 1:22.23, the fastest free relay the Blue Devils have ever had during a season.

"For the first meet of the season, the men came out and made a statement with the performances," said head coach Dan Colella. "We had a number of swimmers have their best season performances ever."

Sophomore Ben Hwang also set a pool record in the 50 freestyle. Hwang set a personal best in-season time of 20.37, which beat his previous season best time of 20.62

Although the women's swim and dive team were not able to capitalize a win against the Seahawks, they did have several key finishes. Senior Ashley Twichell came away with two first place finishes, and senior Kaitlin Ray had a first place finish in the 200 butterfly.

"We faltered in a couple areas, but we succeeded in quite a few as well," said Colella. "We need to clean up a few areas, but luckily we have the whole season in front of us to do that."

The team also had some outstanding performances by freshman, including Christine Wixted who placed first in all three of her first collegiate events. Wixted, a native of Greenwood Village, Colo., set two of the pool records in the women's 100 breast and the women's 200 IM.

Freshman diver Haley Ishimatsu also had two first place finishes on the one and three-meter boards.

The Blue Devils return to action next week in their home opener against the Maryland Terrapins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23.
