DURHAM, N.C. - Duke head coach Ramsey Smith announced on Thursday that Rochester, N.Y. native Jason Tahir has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Blue Devils.
"I'm proud to have Jason join our tennis program at Duke," said Smith. "He is a great kid, stellar student and hard worker who will fit into the Duke community perfectly. Jason has a big time game and I'm excited that his best tennis is in front of him. I can't wait to be part of his bright future as a Blue Devil."
Tahir currently attends The Harley School where he plays for John Dolan. He is listed as a Blue Chip recruit by Tennisrecruiting.net and holds a current ranking of No. 6 in the TennisRPI and No. 11 by the TennisRecruiting.net recruiting list. He is the top player in the state of New York and the No. 2 ranked player in the middle atlantic region.
In 2009, Tahir helped lead his team to the Section 5 Class BB title while earning the 2009 Daily Messenger Player of the Year.
Some of his playing highlights this past year include winning the L1 Drumlins Eastern Des. Closed Championships in Syracuse, N.Y. and the L1 Eastern BG18 Des. Closed Championships in Mountain Lakes, N.J. He also posted a 5-2 record at the USTA National BG18-16 Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich. and a 7-2 mark at the USTA B18-16 National Clay Court Championships in Delray Beach, Fla. He placed third at the USTA National Opens in Naples, Fla.
