Duke opened the 2010-11 season at The Citadel Open and the Hokie Open last weekend. A selection of underclassmen represented the Blue Devils at The Citadel, capturing four top-four finishes and three third-place showings. At the Hokie Open Duke's Diego Bencomo and Riley Adamson both finished with 4-2 records for the day.
Adamson and Mike Bell are set to compete at 141 pounds for the second straight week. Bell defeated Adamson at the Hokie Open in the opening weekend in a consolation bout. At 149 pounds will be Christopher Mullen and Christopher Piccolella, while Ryan Harding looks to continue his strong start at 157 pounds. Harding took third overall at The Citadel Open, going 4-1 in his collegiate opener.
Also hoping to build on his first weekend will be redshirt freshman David Henry at 165 pounds. Henry was 4-2 at The Citadel Open, finishing fourth overall. The 174-pound division will be anchored by senior Willy Mello and redshirt freshman Bret Klopp. The duo competed in two different events a week ago as Klopp posted a 7-1 mark, en route to a third-place showing at The Citadel Open.
Redshirt sophomore Bencomo headlines the 184-pound group after putting together a 3-2 record in his opening weekend at the Hokie Open. Rounding out the lineup will be freshman Brian Self at 197 pounds and Andrew Fulk at heavyweight. Self garnered third-place recognition at The Citadel Open with a 6-1 mark. Fulk wrestled in a pair of bouts at the Hokie Open.
The Blue Devils will compete again on Nov. 21, at the Keystone Classic. Duke will conclude the calendar year by competing at the Cliff Keen Invitational and the Southern Scuffle in December.
