DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team closed out its regular season schedule this afternoon with a 48-0 loss to ACC rival Maryland at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils begin postseason competition at the ACC Tournament on March 5.
Duke finishes the regular season with a 2-6-1 overall record and 0-5 mark in conference action. The Terrapins improve to 14-4 overall and 3-1 against ACC foes.
Maryland dominated the early matches, getting a pair of forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds. With three wrestlers ranked among the top 20 between three of the four next weight classes, the Terrapins continued to roll with four consecutive pins.
The match at 174 pounds between Duke's leader Bret Klopp and 19th-ranked Mike Letts featured a flurry of action in the first two minutes. Klopp picked up the early 2-0 lead with a takedown, but Letts responded with a reversal to tie the bout. After Letts scored a single point, Klopp matched that with an escape to make it 2-2 at the two-minute mark. Klopp looked to make another move, but Letts caught the Blue Devil redshirt freshman and pinned him with 20 seconds left in the period to put Maryland in front 42-0.
Redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo turned a strong performance for the Blue Devils in a narrow 8-6 decision. Bencomo owned the early 2-0 lead with a takedown before Corey Peltier escaped to make it 2-1 after three minutes. Peltier started the second session with a two-point near fall, but the Blue Devil 184-pounder went back in front , 4-3, with a reversal.
After a Peltier escape, Bencomo got another takedown to lead the match 6-5 with two minutes left to wrestle. The final period was an exciting one with Bencomo trying to hold of Peltier. The Maryland junior tied the bout with an escape to start and then with 14 seconds left to wrestler he added a takedown to escape with the 8-6 decision.
After neither team lined up at 197 pounds, Duke redshirt sophomore Andrew Fulk looked to build on his outstanding showing at heavyweight. After a scoreless first period between Fulk and Christian Boley, Fulk scored the first point of the match with an escape in the second. Just over a minute later it was Boley taking the lead with a takedown for a 2-1 lead after five minutes. The Terrapin redshirt freshman notched another two points with a takedown in the first 45 seconds of the final stanza. Fulk came back with an escape to make it 4-2, but could not get any closer in the 4-2 decision.
Duke next will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the ACC Tournament on March 5.
