The Blue Devils will host doubles and singles matches Saturday through Monday against players from Elon, William & Mary and No. 20 North Carolina. Play is slated to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, 11 a.m. on Sunday and 9 a.m. on Monday, with matches taking place at both Duke and North Carolina on Saturday and Sunday.
Each match will consist of four doubles pro-sets, as well as eight singles matches. Points will be awarded to each individual and doubles tandem based upon the position they play (four points for No. 1 doubles, three points for No. 2 doubles, etc.). The singles player and doubles pair with the most points at the end of the three-day tournament will be recognized as champions.
Duke enters the weekend ranked No. 10 in the most recent ITA poll. The Blue Devils feature four ranked singles players in No. 7 Henrique Cunha, No. 17 Chris Mengel, No. 110 Fred Saba and No. 120 Raphael Hemmeler. In addition, two Blue Devil duos are also ranked to start 2012. Cunha and Mengel were tabbed No. 26 in the latest ITA rankings after teaming up for an overall record of 7-4 during the fall. Saba and Hemmeler also earned a national ranking, coming in at No. 40 after finishing the fall slate with a mark of 5-3.
Other ranked players from teams competing at this weekend's invitational include No. 30 Jose Hernandez (North Carolina), No. 34 Jamie Whiteford (William & Mary) and No. 103 William Parker (North Carolina). The Tar Heels also have one ranked doubles team in No. 31 Brennan Boyajian and Hernandez.
The Blue Devils open the tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. against Elon. All results of this weekend's action will be available on www.GoDuke.com.
