Saturday 01/14/2012  -  Duke Sports Information
DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's tennis team kicked off the Duke Invitational Saturday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center, with the Blue Devils sweeping Elon in three doubles matches and seven singles contests.

The day started with three Duke victories in doubles play. Junior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Fred Saba teamed up for an 8-4 victory over Elon's Cameron Silverman and Eric Turner at the No. 1 position to pick up four points in the overall doubles standings. On court three, sophomore Chris Mengel and senior David Holland earned two points with an 8-2 win over Christopher Geaslen and Dan Sablik.

The duo of senior Torsten Wietoska and freshman Raphael Hemmeler fought off a late charge from Elon's Stefan Fortmann and Andrew Prince to claim an 8-6 victory for three points in the doubles competition. Wietoska and Hemmeler also recorded wins in singles play, with the rookie Hemmeler - ranked No. 120 in the latest ITA poll - cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Prince. The victory from the No. 5 spot earned him four points in the singles competition. Meanwhile, Wietoska defeated Turner, 6-4, 6-3, on court two for seven points in the standings.

Also in singles action, senior Luke Marchese led the Blue Devils off the courts with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Geaslen at the No. 6 position, picking up three points with the win. On court four, freshman Jason Tahir posted a 6-1, 6-3 win against Carlos Arboleda to tally five points, while Mengel defeated Silverman at the No. 1 spot, 7-5, 6-0. Seventeenth-ranked Mengel and Silverman went back and forth early in the first set, but Mengel rolled in the second frame to collect eight points with the win. He also improved to 13-3 on the year in singles tournament action.

Saba turned in a strong performance in his No. 3 singles match against Fortmann, winning the first set by a score of 6-4. The Duke sophomore, ranked No. 110 in the latest ITA poll, took a 4-1 lead in the second set, but Fortmann fought back to force a tiebreak. However, it was Saba who would hold on for the victory, winning by a score of 7-6 (4) to earn six points in the singles standings. The win also moved Saba to 10-4 on the season in singles tournament play.

Sophomore Cale Hammond closed out the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Sablik in the No. 7 slot to give him two points overall.

The round robin tournament continues on Sunday as Duke hosts William & Mary at 11 a.m. in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Meanwhile, North Carolina will play host to Elon in Chapel Hill. Live stats, live video and a live blog will be available for Duke's match against William & Mary.
