The seventh-ranked player in the nation, Cunha upset No. 2 Dennis Nevolo of Illinois, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7), in a matchup of top-10 players on Friday evening in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center to hand Nevolo just his third loss since August. Cunha's victory also helped secure a 7-0 Duke sweep of 19th-ranked Illinois for the program's first win over the Fighting Illini since the 2002 season.
Cunha recorded another win at No. 1 singles on Sunday, making quick work of Notre Dame's Casey Watt, 6-1, 6-2, as Duke defeated the 30th-ranked Fighting Irish by a 6-1 margin. A native of Jaú, Brazil, Cunha is now 5-0 in dual match singles play and 19-3 overall. He has also tallied nine wins on the year against ranked opponents.
In doubles play, Cunha teamed with sophomore Fred Saba to go 2-0 on the weekend from the No. 1 position. The Blue Devil duo improved to 3-0 on the spring from the top spot in the lineup.
Cunha was also named the ACC Men's Tennis Player of the Week each of the past three weeks for his performances.
