Cunha, ranked second in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles poll, posted a convincing 6-0, 6-0 victory over No. 89 Max Wennakoski of VCU from the top spot in the Blue Devils' lineup. The win improved Cunha to 9-0 in No. 1 singles play and 23-4 overall this season. The Jaú, Brazil, native also teamed with sophomore Fred Saba to defeat the Rams' Alexis Heugas and Antoine Baroz, 8-5, in the No. 1 doubles match. The Duke tandem, ranked 15th in the nation, moved to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in dual match play with the win.
Cunha's performance helped the fifth-ranked Blue Devils edge No. 36 VCU by a 5-2 margin on the road in Richmond, marking their second victory over the Rams this season. Duke faced VCU earlier this spring during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend regional in Durham, claiming a 6-0 win.
The Blue Devils return to Durham this weekend to host No. 13 Pepperdine on Friday, March 9 at 1 p.m. and No. 11 California on Sunday, March 11 at 12 p.m.
