DURHAM, N.C. - Duke sophomore Hanna Mar was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Earning her first weekly award of 2012, Mar shared this week's honor with Miami's Lina Lilekite.
Mar, ranked 45th in the nation in singles, defeated Notre Dame's 73rd-ranked Kristy Frilling, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 2 singles, as third-ranked Duke cruised past 17th-ranked Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., Saturday afternoon. Her victory clinched the match for the Blue Devils, who despite losing the doubles point for just the second time this season, rebounded to sweep all six singles matches. The Burr Ridge, Ill. native ranks second on the team with 19 singles wins, and owns a 6-2 mark in dual singles matches.
The sophomore also collected Duke's only doubles win in the match, as she teamed up with freshman Annie Mulholland to score an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 spot over the Irish's Jennifer Kellner and Chrissie McGaffigan. Mar and Mulholland improved their doubles mark to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in dual matches, while the 10 victories are also tied for the team lead.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday, Mar. 9 at Central Florida at 2 p.m.
