DURHAM, N.C. - Duke volleyball senior Sophia Dunworth is one of 58 student-athletes to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for the fall 2011 period as announced by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

A native of Pleasanton, Calif., Dunworth recorded her 1,000th career kill this past season and leaves Duke with the seventh most kills in school history. She posted 1,291 kills during her four-year career, totaling at least 295 kills every season. Dunworth led the Blue Devils in attacks over her final two seasons, totaling a team-high 341 kills as a senior.

The 2010 ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Dunworth graduates as a member of the eighth winningest class in Duke volleyball history, which posted a record of 100-31 (.763) over four years while also guiding the Blue Devils to two ACC Championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances.

The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter and spring), there are 29 scholarships available for men and 29 scholarships available for women. The scholarships are one-time, non-renewable grants.

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.
