DURHAM, N.C. - Duke freshman Beatrice Capra was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. The weekly honor is Capra's third this season.
Ranked second in the nation in singles, Capra finished the week with a 2-0 singles record, which included a 6-2, 6-0 victory over 15th-ranked Emily Fraser in the No. 1 spot in the lineup, as fifth-ranked Duke picked up a 4-3 road victory at eighth-ranked Virginia. The newcomer followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Virginia Tech's Martha Blakely in No. 1 singles, helping the Blue Devils shut out the Hokies, 7-0. Capra, who has won six-straight matches, is 18-3 overall, 12-1 in dual singles matches and 10-3 against ranked opponents this season.
Capra and sophomore Hanna Mar teamed up for an 8-3 No. 1 doubles victory over Virginia Tech's Carol Kahoun and Martha Blakely. The match marked the first time Capra and Mar competed as a tandem, while Capra improved her overall doubles record to 23-6 on her freshman campaign.
The fifth-ranked Blue Devils will travel to Clemson, S.C., and Atlanta, Ga., this weekend for its final two ACC road matches of the season to take on 22nd-ranked Clemson and 21st-ranked Georgia Tech.
