Byas came on strong in the second half of 2011 and worked his way into the starting lineup over Duke’s final six games. A versatile back who can play all three safety positions, Byas recorded a career-high 40 tackles and two tackles for loss last season. He averaged five stops per game over Duke’s final six contests and amassed a career-high seven tackles in holding ACC Coastal Division Champion Virginia Tech to just 14 points in a 14-10 loss.
Byas has appeared in 35 games during his Duke career with eight starts and 88 total tackles. He has 24 games with at least two tackles, tying teammate Lee Butler for the most of any active Blue Devil.
One of the strongest defensive backs on the team, Byas led all players at his position in the bench press (355 lbs.) and 225-pound bench press repetitions (17) during the post-spring strength and conditioning evaluation. He also ranked third in the broad jump (10’3”) and tied for third in the power clean (280 lbs.).
