DURHAM, N.C. -- Rising senior Tim Gornik is tied for 35th at the midway point of the 2012 International European Amateur with a 36-hole score of 143 (-1). Gornik is nine shots off the lead and just four strokes out of the top 10 at the Carton House Golf Club just outside of Dublin City, Ireland.
Gornik fired an even-par 72 in the second round of play at the Carton House (Montgomerie Course). He opened with three straight pars before moving to one-under with a birdie on the par 5 fourth hole. The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native to +2 with bogeys on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 10. He recovered with back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14 but gave back a stroke with a bogey on No. 16. He closed out the day with a birdie on the par 5 18th hole for a one-under 143 at the midway point of the event.
In the opening round, Gornik fired a one-under 71. He played the first seven holes at one-over with a bogey on the par 5 fourth hole before closing out the front nine with birdies on No. 8 (par 5) and No. 9 (par 4). Gornik slipped back to even-par with a bogey on No. 11, but closed out the round with six pars and a birdie on the par 3 17th hole.
The host course for the European Amateur is The Montgomerie Course, designed by seven times European Order of merit Winner Colin Montgomerie. It is a 7,300 yard "links style" journey across sweeping firm fairways cavernous bunkers and impeccable greens. It has hosted some of the world's finest golfers at the 2005 and 2006 Irish Opens and the 2010 Irish Seniors Open.
