United States (1-0) Cruises Past Venezuela 9-0
On September 10th, The United States played their first game of the tournament, and defeated Venezuela, 9-0. All four Blue Devils saw action in the game, with Blazing and Johnson starting as goalkeeper and midfielder respectively. Johnson earned her first goal of the tournament in the 44th minute. Barreca, a freshman from Oceanport, N.J., entered the game in the fourth minute in the defense, and Beltrani entered the game a minute later in the midfield. The United States was dominant in the game, seeing five goals before the halftime whistle. The United States were led by Emma Bozek, Nikki Parsley and Sydney Kirby who each contributed two goals to the victory.
Canada (1-0) Tops Brazil 7-0 in First Game of Pool Play
On September 9th, Buttinger and Perrin led the Canadian team to a 7-0 victory over Brazil. Canada was aggressive right from the opening whistle, and received a goal from Buttinger in the 30th minute to put Canada up 4-0 heading into halftime. Perrin, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, came into the game in the sixth minute as a defender for the Canadian team and helped a strong defensive unit claim their first shutout of the tournament.
