GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Megan Hendrickson: Can I say my proudest moment has been coming to Duke? The honor of playing here, it is such an academic and athletic prestigious institution. The opportunity to come here and play here has been a very proud moment of my life.
GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about your sport?
MH: Something that is misunderstood about volleyball is that it's a men's and a women's sport. At Duke, we don't have a men's team, but I think that with the Olympics being on TV people see that more often. But I think boys especially this summer have realized that volleyball is an athletic and intense sport to play, so hopefully there is a little more appreciation for us now.
GoDuke.com: What was your favorite food as a child?
MH: Popcorn. We have our own air pop maker, my dad makes it every night. We each have our own bowl, there is no sharing that takes place, so definitely popcorn.
GoDuke.com: How about now? What is your favorite food now?
MH: Popcorn, same. I have my own air popper now that I brought to college with me.
GoDuke.com: What was your favorite part of being a Duke student-athlete?
MH: The people I get to meet. We have such a great athletic department and I think the academic department on top of that supports us as athletes as well as students. The caring family we have here is just really nice to be a part of.
GoDuke.com: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
MH: I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I can remember, I am going to be a teacher someday. I got to Duke and thought "Oh I really have to explore my options" because this place has so many things to offer, but I can't get away from my dream to teach. Something K-6. I am student teaching this spring. I am excited, but a little nervous. It's weird that it's the next step of my life, that I am actually taking that step now.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence in your life?
MH: My club coach my senior year in high school. He was my club coach for a few years, but he really told me that volleyball could take me places, and I hadn't ever considered that before, and I think it opened the door to many places, Duke being one of them.
GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
MH: I would buy my own place on Lake Michigan because that is where I grew up, and I don't think that's where I am going to spend the rest of my life because I think there are other places to explore, other people to meet, but I would buy a place there so my whole family could meet back there.
GoDuke.com: If you could be a superhero, what would you want your super powers to be?
MH: If I were a superhero I would like to be able to fly. Only if it was faster than any other form of transportation. My family is all over the country: My parents are in Michigan, my sister is in Virginia, my brother is in Florida. If I could fly and not have to pay, and it would be faster than a flight, it would be perfect.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
MH: I can do weird things with my tongue. I could do a clover, I can do the wave. I think it did it on the video for the scoreboard. It is embarrassing.
GoDuke.com: Anything on the IPod that might be embarrassing?
MH: I think everything on my IPod is embarrassing, I haven't updated it in 10 years, so its mostly boy bands and Disney songs. There is some current music, but Disney and boy bands are my guilty pleasures.
GoDuke.com: What is one possession you can't live without?
MH: My phone. Keeping in contact with people. I can't imagine living without it. Not being able to call my mom everyday would be a sad thing for me.
