DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University goalkeeper Tara Campbell has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2012 Senior Class Award, which was released on Tuesday.  To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Campbell, who is a product of Cincinnati, Ohio, is one of the top goalkeepers in the nation for the fifth-ranked Blue Devils.  On the Duke career charts, Campbell ranks third in shutouts (28), second in saves (270) and tied for first in goals-against average (0.87).  The 5-9 keeper has notched one shutout, 21 saves and an 1.28 goals-against average so far on the year.

A three-time ACC Honor Roll selection, Campbell is obtaining a major in civil engineering.  The two-time captain has been very involved in the Durham community over her four years with the Blue Devils as well.  She has been a weekly tutor for second graders at Spaulding Elementary, volunteered at the Durham Soup Kitchen, volunteer for the Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides walk at Duke in the spring of 2012, Read With the Blue Devils and assisted in many soccer clinics with her Blue Devil squad.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2012 NCAA Women’s College Cup in San Diego, Calif., which will take place November 30 and December 2.

The 30 candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplify excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

Duke will next host Maryland on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
