DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke senior safety Walt Canty was named ACC Defensive Back of the Week on Monday after helping the Blue Devils to a 42-17 win over Virginia.
Canty logged a season-high 14 tackles in the victory, including a career-high three tackles for loss. The performance was part of a dominant second-half effort for Duke, as the defense shut out Virginia over the final two quarters and held the Cavaliers to just two yards rushing after the first half.
Canty's three tackles for loss came on key downs late in the game, including a 4th-and-1 in the third quarter with Duke leading 21-17 and a 3rd-and-2 in the fourth quarter with Duke ahead 35-17. The win was the fourth straight for the Blue Devils, whose 5-1 start is the program's best since 1994.
A native of Roebuck, S.C., Canty is the third Duke defensive back to earn ACC Defensive Back of the Week honors this season, joining cornerback Ross Cockrell (Sept. 17) and safety Jordon Byas (Oct. 1). He is the fourth Duke player overall to earn an ACC Player of the Week citation, as wide receiver Conner Vernon garnered ACC Receiver of the Week honors on Sept. 4.
Duke (5-1, 2-0 ACC) will look for its sixth win of the season on Saturday, Oct. 13, at Virginia Tech. The game is slated for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff and will be broadcast by the ACC Network. Check local listings for carriers.
