Freshman Charles Copti notches Top-25 Finish at NAC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Duke freshman Charles Copti turned in a 23rd-place finish in Division I men's saber at the US Fencing North American Cup, and fellow saber Eugene Chung placed 43rd out of 129 participants at the national competition on Friday.

Copti and Chung both went 4-1 in the opening pool format round but were forced to square off against one another In the second round's single-elimination bracket format. Copti got the better of his sophomore teammate, coming away with a 15-13 victory, but fell 15-12 to eventual fifth-place finisher Timothy Morehouse.

Also representing the Duke women was freshman saber Isabella Barna, who placed 43rd out of 151 entries. Barna went 4-2 in the first-round pool play and defeated Amanda Han 15-11 in her opening bout in round two.

Duke junior epee Dylan Nollner will compete on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. Nollner, who won silver at the 2012 U-20 Junior Olympics and placed 10th at the Junior World Championships with Team USA, is Duke's top returning epee following a 33-11 record as a sophomore in 2012.
