CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Duke rowing team won two events on the first day of the Head of the Chattahoochee, taking top honors in the Championship 8+ and Championship 4+.
Duke's A crew of coxswain Caroline Kiritsy, Emily Theys, Claire Vannelli, Grace Cassidy, Laura Sciarrino, Caroline Williams, Lauren Miranda, Sophia Blair and Katie Dukovich just missed finishing the Championship 8+ in under 16 minutes, posting a time of 16:03.5, which was more than 20 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Oklahoma (16:25.6). The Blue Devils also bested boats from Miami (16:28.4), Texas (16:35.4) and Tennessee (16:39.3) that rounded out the top five. Duke's second entry in the race also notched a top-10 finish, placing ninth with a time of 16:51.8.
In the Championship 4+, coxswain Ashleigh Anne McKinney, Emily Theys, Claire Vannelli, Victoria Tsamis and Laura Sciarrino turned in a time of 17:46.1 to finish more than 25 seconds ahead of the next closest boat, runner-up Miami (18:12.9). Duke's B entry in the race finished 17th out of 36 entries.
Duke also compted in the Championship 2x and placed eighth and tenth.
