DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that senior forward Lee Melchionni was named a team captain for the 2005-06 season. Melchionni will join three other members of this senior class Sean Dockery, J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams as captains. This marks the first time in Duke basketball history the team has had four captains.
“Lee is very deserving of this honor,” said Krzyzewski. “He shows up every day with a good attitude and has developed into one of our strongest leaders. Lee has earned this by giving our program everything he has on a consistent basis throughout his Duke career.”
Melchionni has seen action in 81 career games, including 14 starting assignments. He is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 7.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. The Lancaster, Pa., native shot .406 overall from the field (80-of-197) and .396 from three-point range (57-of-144) last season.
Melchionni’s father, Gary, also served as a Duke basketball captain in 1972 and 1973.
