Sumrall Claims Medalist Honors at The Trojan

GOLDSBORO, N.C. -- Duke senior Adam Sumrall fired a final round 67 (-5) Tuesday to claim medalist honors with a seven-under 137 in The Trojan at Walnut Creek Country Club. The victory was the first of Sumrall's career and the second by a Blue Devil golfer this season.

Sumrall scored a two-shot victory over Barton's Nicolas Fonseca while teammate Tim Gornik finished third with a three-under 141 (70-71). Kim Koivu (Brevard) was fourth with a two-under 142 with Tanner Pearson (Cape Fear CC) and Jesus Valderrama (Mount Olive) tied for fifth at even-par.

Sumrall was particularly strong on the par 5s at Walnut Creek CC playing them at five-under, while also playing the par 3s and par 4s at one-under. Gornik was three-under on the par 5s, while also collecting eight birdies and 23 pars at the Trojan.

Duke's Turner Southey-Gordon was among a group of players tied for seventh at one-over. He posted rounds of 73-72 to secure his second top 10 finish of the season. Southey-Gordon shared the tournament lead in par 3 scoring at two-under and was also tied for the lead at the event with nine birdies.

Sophomore Michael Ricaurte tied for 42nd with a 10-over 154 (76-78).

Barton won the team event with a three-over 579 with Mount Olive's A and B teams finishing second and third respectively. Duke's four players competed as individuals in the event.
