No. 8 Duke Opens 2013 NCAA Tournament Against Princeton
Eighth-ranked Duke (12-5, 2-3 ACC) begins NCAA Tournament play Friday, May 10 with a first-round matchup against Princeton in Annapolis, Md. …  The game is set for 7:15 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium … The Tigers enter the tournament with a 10-6 record after falling to Dartmouth, 11-10, in two overtime periods in the Ivy League Tournament semifinals May 3.

Princeton Series History
Friday’s NCAA First Round contest marks the 17th all-time meeting between Duke and Princeton with the series tied, 8-8 ... The Blue Devils have won six of the last seven games in the series, including most recently in a 12-9 victory March 3, 2012 in Princeton, N.J. ... Princeton won the only previous NCAA Tournament contest between the two schools by a 9-8 score in three overtime periods on May 14, 2000.

IWLCA All-Region Teams Announced
Five Blue Devils were named to the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association’s (IWLCA) All-South Region teams, as announced by the organization May 7 ... Junior defender Taylor Virden collected her second all-region nod in as many years and was named to the first team for the first time in her career ... Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Duryea, sophomore attacker Kerrin Maurer, sophomore defender Gabby Moise and sophomore midfielder Taylor Trimble were each selected to the second team.

Smesko Nets First Weekly Honors
Freshman attacker Kelci Smesko was tabbed the ACC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career following the Blue Devils’ 18-9 win over Boston University May 5 in Durham ... Smesko led all scorers with a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists ... The Ridgewood, N.J., native was also selected the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week for her performance ... Sophomore Gabby Moise joined Smesko in garnering weekly ACC accolades, earning the league’s Defensive Player of the Week nod for the second time this season ... Moise tallied two caused turnovers against the Terriers and helped the defense limit its opponent to single-digit scoring for the ninth time this spring.

Duke in the NCAA Tournament
Duke earned the program’s 16th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament ... The Blue Devils own an all-time record of 17-15 in the tournament while making six trips to the national semifinals (1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011) ... Duke is one of seven schools with consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances of five or more years, joining Maryland (23), Virginia (17), Northwestern (9), North Carolina (8), Pennsylvania (6) and Massachusetts (5) ... She is also is second in the conference and tied for 33rd nationally in assists (27) with eight multi-assist games ... Hommel is tied for third in the league and ranks 38th in the country, sporting an average of 2.75 goals per game ... She also leads the team in hat tricks with nine ... Both Hommel and Maurer have garnered ACC Offensive Player of the Week honors this season.

Scoring Streaks
Sophomore Taylor Trimble has registered a point in a career-best 12 consecutive contests entering Friday’s NCAA First Round game against the Tigers ... Senior Makenzie Hommel has scored a point in a career-best 11 straight outings while fellow attackers Kerrin Maurer and Kelci Smesko have tallied a point in each of the last four contests.

Virden Quick on the Draw
Through 17 games, Duke leads its opponents in draw controls by a 208-195 margin and is 9-1 this spring when winning the draw controls category ... Junior defender Taylor Virden leads the squad with 48 draw controls this spring for an average of 3.00 per game, which ranked her fifth in the ACC entering the weekend ... The Ellicott City, Md., native won a career-best six draws earlier this season against Vanderbilt (3/2), and has registered three or more draws in 10 games overall ... Duryea Maturing Quickly in the Cage
Freshman Kelsey Duryea has been solid in the net since making her first appearance in the second half against Maryland on Feb. 24 ... Duryea has started all 12 contests since then, ranking fourth nationally in save percentage and 15th in saves per game ... The Beverly, Mass., native was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this spring on Apr. 23 following a pair of wins against Davidson and Ohio State ... Duryea recorded a season-high 15 stops against North Carolina on March 28, making her one of just four netminders in program history to notch 15 or more saves in a game.

Attack Duo Moving Up Career Lists
Senior Makenzie Hommel and sophomore Kerrin Maurer have both enjoyed successful seasons ... Hommel has registered a team-high 44 goals to go with 10 assists for a total of 54 points, while Maurer owns 32 goals and leads the team in assists (27) and points (59) ... Hommel surpassed the 100-point mark for her career with a two-goal performance against Boston College (Apr. 6) ... Maurer reached the 100-point barrier with a five-point performance against Davidson (Apr. 17) and topped the 50-assist milestone in a win over Ohio State (Apr. 20).

Rookies Make Immediate Impact
Six Blue Devil freshmen have seen the field this season with Maddy Acton, Kelsey Duryea and Kelci Smesko entering the starting lineup ... Smesko has started every contest at attack and has tallied 35 points (22g, 13a), with the 13 helpers ranking her second on the squad ... Acton has played in every game with four starts, recording 17 points (14g, 3a) ... Duryea made her first appearance between the pipes in the second half against Maryland and has started the 11 games since then ... Maurer Climbing Single Season Lists
In just her second season, sophomore attacker Kerrin Maurer continues to etch her name into the program record books ... The Setauket, N.Y., native’s team-leading 27 assists this spring rank her ninth on Duke’s single season assist chart, up three spots from a year ago ... Maurer is also tied for 19th on the Blue Devils’ single season list for points with a team-high 59 in 17 contests.
