Hello Duke Fans!

It was hard to leave Slovenia in the rearview, but we are just as glad to be in Italy!! First, we stopped in the seaside city of Trieste. For about two hours we explored the city and discovered its little cafes, pastry shops and clothing stores. Some of us even sat on the pier enjoying the breeze off the Adriatic Sea while eating gelato.

As soon as we arrived in Pordenone, Italy we set off to play APC Chions/Fiume Veneto. Every set was a close battle and both teams challenged each other to compete at a high caliber. We were able to win the match in four sets (26-24, 25-21, 15-25, 25-18).

Duke vs. APC Chions/Fiume Veneto Team Stat Leaders
Jeme Obeime: 18 kills, 2 block assists
Emily Sklar: 10 kills, 5 digs
Chelsea Cook: 8 kills, 7 blocks assists, 1 block solo
Christina Vucich: 8 kills, 13 assists
Maggie Deichmeister: 19 assists, 5 digs, 2 block assists
Ali McCurdy: 17 digs
Breanna Atkinson: 1 block solo, 1 block assist

“The team was resilient today and played well tonight,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “After having a bus break down and being delayed on our day of travel they came out and played hard.  They rolled with the punches with limited food and a very late start at 8:30 p.m. due to the travel glitches on the day.  [I’m] very happy to see how solid we played after the day.”

After the match, Kelsey Williams even talked to some of the girls in Italian from courses she’s taken at Duke. The girls were very friendly, and both teams exchanged T-shirts. We then dined at De Jenny. They served us a typical Italian meal of penne pasta with meaty tomato sauce and a second plate of lemon chicken. Everything was absolutely delicious!

Christina Vucich’s Thoughts on the Day:  “We didn’t let the rainy weather stop us from enjoying the pastries, gelato, and fresh strawberries of Trieste. We ended the day with some great volleyball and learned why Italians are so famous for their pasta!”
