URBANA, Ill. – Just days after leading the team to a sixth consecutive Round of 16 appearance, junior Hanna Mar of the Duke women’s tennis team is set to open play at the NCAA Individual Championship May 22-27 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Center, hosted by the University of Illinois. Mar, listed at No. 29 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, is slated to face 18th-ranked Samantha Vickers of Tulsa in the opening round of the Championship Wednesday, May 22 at 9 a.m. CT.
Mar, a native of Burr Ridge, Ill., enters the NCAA Individual Championship with a 24-9 singles record on the season, including an impressive 14-3 mark in tournament play. Playing in the top spot for the Blue Devils during the 2013 campaign, Mar recorded a 10-6 ledger against nationally ranked opponents, highlighted by four wins over players ranked in the top-50.
A two-time All-ACC selection, Mar has performed well at national events this season, including a trip to the quarterfinals at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship Nov. 8-11. At the event, Mar cruised past UNLV’s Aleksandra Josifoska, 6-3, 6-1, before outlasting Santa Clara’s Katie Le, 7-6, 7-5. In the quarterfinal, Mar fell to then-22nd ranked Anett Shutting of California-Berkeley, 6-2, 6-1.
Mar is one of three Blue Devils who earned a bid to the NCAA Individual Championship after outstanding 2013 campaigns. In addition to Mar, the doubles team of senior Mary Clayton and sophomore Ester Goldfeld were selected to the Championship, but will be unable to compete due to injury.
Mar will take on Vickers in the opening round Wednesday, with the winner of the match advancing to face the winner of a match between Florida’s Sofie Oyen and TCU’s Stefanie Tan. For live stats and video, visit the NCAA Championship Homepage by clicking here.
