DURHAM, N.C. – Former Blue Devil starting quarterback Thaddeus Lewis was picked up off waivers by the Detroit Lions, while former long snapper Jackson Anderson signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys, the teams announced Wednesday.

Lewis, a product of Opa-Locka, Fla., signed with the St. Louis Rams out of Duke in 2009 but spent his last two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He drew his first career NFL start in week 17 last season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 22-of-32 passes for 204 yards with one touchdown and one interception. A four-year starter for the Blue Devils from 2006-09, Lewis earned All-ACC honors twice and is one of just two players in league history to throw for over 10,000 career yards. As a Blue Devil, he made 46 starts under center and completed 877-of-1,510 (.581) passes for 10,065 yards with 67 touchdowns and 40 interceptions.

A native of Frisco, Texas, Anderson joins his first NFL team after signing a contract with the Cowboys. Anderson was a mainstay of the Duke special teams unit, playing in all 49 games of his college career as Duke’s long snapper on placement kicks and punts. As a senior in 2012, he led a kicking unit that featured two Freshman All-America selections, punter Will Monday and placekicker Ross Martin.

Anderson becomes the third Duke player from the 2012 team to sign with an NFL team, joining quarterback Sean Renfree, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Atlanta Falcons, and wide receiver Conner Vernon, who signed as a free agent with the Oakland Raiders.

The Blue Devils kick off the 2013 season Saturday, August 31 against N.C. Central at 4 p.m. on ESPN3. Season tickets are available online at or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 919-681-BLUE.
