MEDALLIN, Colombia – Sophomore pole vaulter Megan Clark and freshman heptathlete Kendall Gustafson represented the United States this past weekend at the biennial Pan American Junior Athletics Championship in Medallin, Colombia. Both athletes qualified earlier in the year at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship in Des Moines, Iowa.

Clark led all Americans in the pole vault, clearing 13-01.5 (4.00). The vault earned the sophomore a fifth-place finish in the competition. Clark will enter the 2013-14 season with a personal-best mark of 13-07.25 (4.15), which she vaulted at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet.

Incoming freshman Gustafson also earned a fifth-place finish in the heptathlon, compiling 5,138 points over seven events. Gustafson qualified for the meet with a 5,189 point performance at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Gustafson’s qualifying point total would eclipse the current Duke heptathlon record of 5,145 points set by Karolina Haraldsdottir in 2010.

Clark’s performance in Medallin follows an impressive freshman season, including a fourth-place finish at the ACC indoor championship meet Feb. 22 and a fifth-place finish at the ACC outdoor championship meet April 18. Gustafson joins an experienced group of heptathletes at Duke, including redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot, junior Baily Murphy and redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski. The three heptathletes hold the second, third and fourth highest heptathlon point totals in school history, respectively.
