Duke dominated overtime, including hitting the post, but could not break the tie ... Two days later versus the Huskies, it was Mathers coming up big again as he tallied the game winner in the 72nd minute ... Alex Long garnered his first career shutout as a Blue Devil.

About The Terrapins
Maryland, a preseason No. 2 squad, fell to 13th in the NSCAA poll following an 0-1-1 start to the year ... The Terrapins battled Stanford to a 3-3 draw before falling to California 3-2 in overtime ... The perennial power returns reigning Hermann Award winner Patrick Mullins, but has an inexperienced backline, including a rookie goalkeeper ... Maryland started four rookie defenders and a freshman keeper in the loss to the Bears ... Jake Pace and Schillo Tshuma both have two goals apiece ... Only 17 players saw the field in Maryland’s two games.

Last Time We Met
John Stertzer tallied a goal in the 13th minute before Duke’s Nat Eggleston tied the score in the 27th minute off a cross from Ryan Thompson ... The score remained tied for just 15 more minutes when Christiano Francois broke through for what proved to be the game winner ... Maryland outshot Duke 19-8, including 11-3 in the second half ... The Blue Devils generated seven corner kicks in the 90 minutes.

Mathers Making Moves
Sophomore Zach Mathers has made the move from the back to an attacking midfield role this season and it has paid off for the Blue Devils ... An All-ACC Freshman Team selection as a center back in 2012, Mathers started both matches this past weekend as an attacking midfielder ... His two goals this season match his total from last year.

Marathon Men
Duke’s backline trio of Rob Dolot, Nat Eggleston and Sebastien Ibeagha are the lone field players to play all 200 minutes over the weekend ... Overall, Ibeagha has gone the distance in 40 of his 53 contests ... The Texas native and Dolot came out of games just twice last season ... Eggleston returns to the defense after moving to midfield last season ... He played the full 90-plus in all but five games as a freshman.

Rookie Firsts
Duke’s freshmen Brody Huitema, Jimmy Doll and Seo-In Kim all registered their first collegiate points this past weekend with an assist apiece ... All three started both contests, while rookie Jared Golestani came off the bench ... First-year member of the team, Tomas Coulter also earned his first starts of the year, while Alex Long posted his first shutout in a Blue Devil goalkeeping jersey.

Ibeagha Garners Preseason Honors
Senior captain Sebastien Ibeagha picked up a host of preseason honors heading into the year ... The center back was named to the College Soccer News Preseason All-America first team and to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Best XI first team ... He also was one of 10 defenders picked for the MAC Hermann Award Watch List.

New Faces, Veteran Players
The Blue Devils welcomed a pair of veteran players to the squad this season ... Redshirt senior Alex Long and Tomas Coulter both donned the Duke jersey for the first time this past weekend ... Long comes to Duke for a redshirt year after completing his career at South Carolina, while Coulter joins the program after playing for Bath University ... Coulter, attending Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, reached out to the Duke coaching staff  and was invited to try out during the preseason ... The Great Britain native was officially offered a spot on the team in the final days of preseason camp.
 
Duke Welcomes Six Newcomers
The Blue Devils welcome six new players to the Duke family in 2012 ... The list includes four freshmen along with Coulter and Long ... Jimmy Doll, Jared Golestani, Brody Huitema and Seo-In Kim are the rookies of the group, coming in as the No. 22-ranked incoming class ... Huitema headlines the list of four freshmen, being considered a freshman who could have the biggest impact on a team this season.

Palodichuk Returns From Timbers
Junior forward Nick Palodichuk spent the first half of his summer playing with the Portland Timbers U-23 squad ... Palodichuk played seven games with the Timbers before returning to Duke to enroll in summer school.

Veteran Defense
Duke’s backline is an experienced bunch with seniors Rob Dolot and Sebastien Ibeagha anchoring the lineup with juniors Jack Coleman and Nat Eggleston ... The  Blue Devils have 22 shutouts since 2010 heading into Friday’s contest including an impressive nine last season posted

New Look In Goal
For the first time in four seasons, the Blue Devils will have a new face in the goal ... A veteran keeper will fill the role left by All-American James Belshaw as redshirt senior Alex Long will anchor the defense after two years as the starting goalie at South Carolina.

Huitema Tops Freshman List
Brody Huitema steps onto Duke’s campus highly regarded as a pure goal scorer ... The Vancouver Whitecaps Academy product tallied 30 goals in 29 games for the Whitecaps to lead the squad to the top spot in the Northwest Division and to the USSDA Finals Week ... He most recently returned from Spain where he played for the Canadian U-18 squad in an international tournament ... TopDrawerSoccer.com listed him on the Best XI Freshman list.

Soccer Runs In The Family
Freshman Jimmy Doll had an idea of what to expect during preseason this year after getting advice from his sister who is a junior for the Stanford women’s soccer team ... Alex Doll started all but one game for the Cardinal last year, scoring six goals and assisting on three tallies for 15 points. 
 
Breaking Down The Schedule
The Blue Devils will play six programs currently ranked in the top 25, including two of the top four ... Overall, Duke will play seven road games and 11 home games ... Nine NCAA Tournament teams from 2012 are on the slate for the Blue Devils in 2013.

ACC Preseason Poll
Duke was picked to finish seventh in the 12-team league in a vote of the ACC’s coaches ... The Blue Devils finished with a 3-4-1 record last season to finish seventh ... Maryland was selected to retain the title.
