Menís Tennis Hosts Duke Fab Four to Start Fall

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s tennis program will kick off the 2013-14 campaign this weekend as it plays host at the annual Duke Fab Four Invitational at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C. The tournament features three singles and doubles draws, with matches beginning the morning of Friday, Sept. 13 and continuing through Sunday, Sept. 15 in Cary. Other teams scheduled to take part in the three-day event include Elon, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Radford, South Florida, VCU, Wake Forest and William & Mary.

“Our guys have been training hard the past few weeks, and I know they are eager to get out there to compete,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “We have a lot of solid doubles players this year, and we will be mixing around our doubles pairing in our first few fall tournaments.”

Overall, eight players slated to compete in singles action this weekend received preseason rankings from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), with Wake Forest’s Romain Bogaerts leading the way at No. 5. Other ranked players include Duke’s Michael Redlicki (No. 22) and Fred Saba (No. 26), Elon’s Cameron Silverman (No. 34), Louisville’s Sebastien Stiefelmeyer (No. 47), Duke’s Raphael Hemmeler (No. 49), North Carolina’s Nelson Vick (No. 92) and NC State’s Austin Powell (No. 96). In addition, Nick Horton of NC State was listed sixth and Alexandru Gozun of South Florida tied for eighth in the ITA’s top newcomer/freshman singles rankings.

Two doubles teams earned spots in the ITA’s preseason poll, as Silverman and Stefan Fortmann of Elon were tabbed No. 16 and Oliver Pramming and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz of South Florida were listed at No. 39.
