FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Duke’s No. 3 women’s golf team opened first-round play Friday, Sept. 20, at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn. The Blue Devils ended the day tied for eighth place, carding an eight-over-par 296.

Arizona State led after the first round, shooting a three-under-par 285. The Sun Devils were the only team to shoot under par as a team. Arizona State leads UCLA (289) and Vanderbilt (289) by four strokes, heading into second round play. Auburn (290), NC State (291), Baylor (292), Duke (296), Alabama (296), Michigan State (296), Princeton (296), Wake Forest (298), Virginia (298), Kentucky (300) and Texas (292) rounded out the field.

Senior Alejandra Cangrejo led the Blue Devils in the opening round of play, carding a one-under-par 71. The first round score places Cangrejo seventh. Cangrejo recorded a flawless front nine, shooting a one-under-par 35. The Bogota, Colombia native birdied the par-three No. 5 before recording four consecutive pars. Cangrejo saw the first blemish on her scorecard on the back nine, suffering a bogey on the par-four No. 10, however the bogey was followed by five successive pars. Cangrejo was one of only four players to notch a birdie on No. 16, en route to an even 36 score on the back nine. 

Freshman Yu Liu opened her Blue Devil career with a two-over-par 38 on the front nine of the Vanderbilt Legends North Course. After parring the first six holes, the Beijing, China native bogeyed No. 7, double bogeyed No. 8 and parred No. 9. Liu rebounded nicely, opening play on the back nine with birdies on the par-four No. 11 and No 17. Following a one-under-par 35 for the back nine, Liu concluded her first round, shooting a one-over-par 73 to place tied for 30th.

Fellow freshman Sandy Choi participated in the second collegiate tournament of her career, recording a four-over-par 76 after one round of play. The first round 76 places Choi tied for 46th after 18 holes of golf. Choi tallied two birdies on No. 5 and No. 7, one bogey on No. 4 and a par on the remaining five holes on the front nine. After a one-under-par 35 over the first nine holes, the San Diego, Calif. native bogeyed five of the final nine holes.  

After recording a four-over-par 40 on the front nine, a result of bogeys on No. 2, 5, 6 and 9, sophomore Celine Boutier settled in with three consecutive pars to open the back nine. Hailing from Montrouge, France, Boutier recorded two double bogeys on No. 15 and No. 18 to end the round with a nine-over-par 81 and tied for 85th place.

Following an eighth-place finish at last week’s NCAA Fall Preview, senior Laetitia Beck returned to action with an even 36 on the front nine of the Mason Rudolph Championship, including seven pars, one bogey and one birdie. Beck made the turn with a bogey on No. 10 and No. 11 before parring the next four holes. The Caesarea, Israel native shot double bogey, par, double bogey on the final three holes to end her first round with a five-over-par 76 and tied for 46th.

Duke junior Irene Jung entered the tournament as an individual, beginning her round on the back nine with a bogey on No. 10 and No. 11 before recording six straight pars to earn a two-over-par 37. On the front nine, Jung brought her first round score even to 72, shooting a 35 on three birdies, four pars and two bogies.

Duke will continue competition Saturday, with tee time slated for 9 a.m. (EST).
