DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Blazing received ACC Field Hockey Player of the Week recognition following a standout performance in Duke’s 3-2 overtime shootout victory over top-ranked and previously unbeaten North Carolina Friday evening in Chapel Hill.

A native of Durham, N.C., Blazing totaled 22 saves against 24 shots on goal by the Tar Heels to lead the Blue Devils to a win over their conference rival for the first time since 2006. Duke also handed North Carolina its first regular season ACC loss in three years.

Blazing’s 22 saves more than doubled her previous career high of nine and marked nine more than the next highest single-game total by an ACC goalkeeper this season. Her performance included a critical stop on the Tar Heels’ fourth shootout attempt to send Duke to the win in its conference opener.

Blazing also posted four saves Sunday in a 3-1 non-conference win over Longwood. She owns an 8-2 record in goal this season to go with a 1.14 goals against average and an .833 save percentage. The ACC Player of the Week honors are the first of her career.

With the two wins last weekend, Blazing and the Blue Devils (8-2) jumped six spots to No. 7 in Tuesday’s edition of the 2013 Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll. The squad will host California Friday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. and No. 14 Wake Forest Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium. Both matches will be streamed live on Inside Access.
