DURHAM, N.C. – The seventh-ranked Duke field hockey squad (13-4, 3-2 ACC) wraps up regular season play Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. in an ACC showdown with top-ranked Maryland (17-1, 5-0 ACC) … The Blue Devils will honor the program’s eight seniors at the conclusion of the contest.

Maryland Series History
Duke and the Terrapins will square off for the 42nd time in program history with Maryland leading the all-time series, 30-8-3 … The two teams met twice in 2012 as the Terrapins earned a 2-0 regular season victory in College Park and defeated the Blue Devils 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship … Redshirt senior Devon Gagliardi scored an equalizing goal in the ACC Championship matchup last fall but Maryland went on to earn the win.

The Blue Devils are 81-167-4 all-time against teams in their own conference … The squad kicked off ACC play Sept. 27 with a thrilling 3-2 overtime shootout victory over previously top-ranked and unbeaten North Carolina before topping Wake Forest (3-1) and Boston College (2-1, OT) and falling to Syracuse (2-1, 2OT) and Virginia (4-3).
Scouting the Terrapins
Top-ranked Maryland is 17-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play heading into Saturday’s regular season finale … The squad has claimed the top spot in each of the last five NFHCA polls and has suffered just one loss on the season, a 3-2 decision against Old Dominion Oct. 20 … The Terrapins lead the nation with a 4.53 scoring average and rank second in goals per game (4.71) and points per game (12.44) … Senior forward Jill Witmer is second in the ACC and seventh nationally in points per game at 2.47 and is also top-10 in the country in goals per game (1.00) … She currently leads in the ACC in game-winning goals with six … Midfielder Anna Dessoye ranks second in the conference and seventh nationally in assists per game with a 0.78 average … In goal, senior Natalie Hunter owns a 1.10 goals against average and a .792 save percentage to rank second in the conference in both categories.
Last Time Out
Duke collected two wins on its road swing to Boston last weekend … The Blue Devils rallied from a late one-goal deficit against ACC opponent Boston College, as senior Grace Christus registered her first career goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to send the match to overtime … Sophomore Aileen Johnson scored less than a minute into overtime to claim the 3-2 victory for Duke Saturday, Oct. 26 … The next day, senior Emmie Le Marchand tallied two goals to lead Duke to a 3-1 win over Boston University.
Blazing Among Nation’s Top Goalkeepers
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper and Durham, N.C., product Lauren Blazing leads the ACC and ranks fifth among all Division I goalkeepers in save percentage with an .812 clip through 17 games … She has compiled a 1.22 goals against average in addition to guiding the defense to four shutouts … The Durham, N.C., native was named the ACC Player of the Week and the Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week following a career-high 22-save performance in a 3-2 shootout win over previously top-ranked and unbeaten North Carolina Sept. 27.
Balanced Scoring by Blue Devil Offense
Fourteen different Duke players have tallied a point through 17 games this fall … Twelve different Blue Devils have registered a goal, led by senior Emmie Le Marchand with 10 … Le Marchand paces the squad and is tied for sixth in the ACC with 28 points … Junior midfielder Abby Beltrani has totaled a career-best eight assists to tie for eighth in the ACC in assists per game along with Le Marchand … Five different players scored in Duke’s 6-0 win over Radford Sept. 22.
Heimbach Anchors Back Line
Senior defender Paula Heimbach continues to be one of the Blue Devils’ most dependable backs in 2013 … An All-ACC honoree and Longstreth/NFHCA third team All-America selection last fall, Heimbach was tabbed to the Preseason All-ACC squad last month by a vote of the league’s seven head coaches … She tallied the Blue Devils’ first defensive save of the year against Syracuse Oct. 11 … Heimbach and the Duke defense own four shutouts on the year and currently allow just 1.24 goals per game.
Le Marchand Moving Up Career Charts
After topping the 100-point mark for her career earlier this season, senior forward Emmie Le Marchand continues to etch her name into the program record books … With 119 points for her career, the Worcester, England product currently sits eighth overall in school history … Le Marchand also ranks eighth all-time in career goals (48) and 17th in career assists (23).
The Blue Devils’ eight-member senior class has guided the squad to its best start to a season since 2008 … Led by Emmie Le Marchand’s 10 goals and Cherry Seaborn’s five tallies, the senior class has accounted for 53 percent of Duke’s point total this fall … Defensively, Brenna Rescigno and Paula Heimbach have anchored the unit to four shutouts … Ashley Camano, Grace Christus, Devon Gagliardi, Heimbach, Le Marchand, Rescigno, McKay Ross and Seaborn will all be honored for their contributions to the program following Saturday’s game.
ACC Well-Represented in NFHCA Coaches Poll
The ACC continues to dominate the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll, placing five schools within the top seven … The Blue Devils moved up one spot to No. 7 in the poll this week following last weekend’s wins in Boston … Maryland maintains the top spot in this week’s poll while Syracuse moved up to No. 2 … North Carolina (3), Virginia (4) and Boston College (10) are also within the top 10.
2013 ACC Championship
The 2013 ACC Championship will be hosted by Boston College Nov. 7-10 in Newton, Mass. … The seeding for the tournament will be released Saturday following the conclusion of all regular season contests.
