DURHAM, N.C.—The Major League Soccer Playoffs continue Wednesday evening as a selection of former Blue Devils look to move one step closer to the MLS Cup. Five former Duke men’s soccer players remain in action as the second leg of the conference semifinals start Wednesday, Nov. 6.
New England Revolution head coach and recent Duke Hall of Fame inductee, Jay Heaps, and 2009 graduate Darrius Barnes helped guide the Revs to a 2-1 home victory in the opening round. Barnes went the distance in the back for New England took the lead in the two-leg series.
The Revs travel to Sporting Kansas City Wednesday, Nov. 6 for a 9 p.m. kickoff with second-seeded Sporting KC. With two goals in the opening game, New England can tie and advance to the conference finals set to begin Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m.
Real Salt Lake, led by former Blue Devils Jason Kreis at head coach and Garth Lagerway as the General Manager, suffered a 1-0 setback to the LA Galaxy in the first leg of the Western Conference semifinals. RSL will try to bounce back Nov. 7 at Rio Tinto Stadium at 9 p.m. (ET).
In addition to Kreis and Lagerway, recent Duke graduate Cole Grossman is a member of the squad and earned a spot on the roster for the playoffs. RSL will need to win by at least two goals to advance in regulation. A one-goal win for the home squad would require an extra 30 minutes of action and if neither team scores a penalty kick shootout. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
