CARY, N.C. – Freshman Stephen Shine captured his second individual win of the season Saturday at the Three Stripe Invitational in Cary, N.C., as the Duke men’s cross country team took the first three positions to earn the team win, scoring 24 points. The Blue Devils improve to 70-24 overall with the win and 17-7 in the ACC.

Duke defeated four other Division I teams, including intra-state rivals NC State (45) and UNC (61), as well as Elon (93) and UNC Greensboro (114).

Saturday's win marks the second victory for Shine after he opened his collegiate career with a win at the Bull City Classic Aug. 30. A product of Briarcliff, N.Y., Shine earned his second title after finishing eight seconds ahead of second place-finisher and teammate, sophomore Eddie Merenda. Shine clocked a time of 15:10.74 over the 5,000-meter WakeMed Soccer Complex cross country course, while Merenda finished in a time of 15:18.31. Merenda improved on his time of 15:39 from last season’s Three Stripe Invitational.

Sophomore Blake Udland placed third overall, running a time of 15:24.01. Udland’s finish was the second highest of his collegiate career. Udland placed in the top five twice this season, including a second-place finish at the Royal Cross Country Challenge.

Appearing in his third meet of the season, junior Nate McClafferty finished sixth in a time of 15:39.48. Similar to Merenda, McClafferty also bested his 2012 Three Stripe Invitational time of 16:05 by 25 seconds.

Freshman Weston Carvalho finished as Duke’s final scorer Saturday, placing 12th overall in a time of 15:44.85. Carvalho scored earlier in the season for the Blue Devils, when the Westminster, Md., native placed fifth for Duke at the Bull City Classic.

Freshman Aaron Liberatore rounded out the Duke contingent, finishing in a time of 16:08.02 and placing 19th overall.

The Blue Devils travel to Charlottesville, Va., Friday, Nov. 15, to compete in the Southeast Regional Championships.
